Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the World Cup qualifying match.
Belarus began with a heavy 5:1 defeat to Greece and look vulnerable in defence. Scotland, meanwhile, earned a 0:0 draw away to Denmark and could build on that result by claiming their first three points.
Belarus
The match against Greece was disastrous: Belarus were 4:0 down by half-time and fell to a 5:1 defeat. Across their last two matches Belarus have conceded nine goals, which underlines structural issues at the back. That said, earlier in 2025 the team put together a three-match winning run, scoring 11 goals. At home they are inconsistent and often drop points even against mid-level opposition. The only positive was a goal by German Barkovskiy, who came off the bench and ended his goal drought. In qualifying history Belarus have yet to reach either the World Cup or the European Championship.
Scotland
Scotland have improved in organisation and discipline. In the opening round, a 0:0 draw with Denmark was taken as a success: they held firm against strong opposition. The familiar issues remain: inconsistent finishing and a lack of progress at major tournaments, as they have not made it out of the group at either the World Cup or the European Championship. However, in FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying they have a genuine chance, and the meeting with Belarus is a key moment. Over their last 10 matches, they have a 4-3-3 record, and away from home Scotland play pragmatically, relying more on free kicks and corners and intense pressing.
Belarus vs Scotland Prediction
Both teams will have to attack: Belarus need to make amends in front of their supporters, and Scotland will look to stick to their game plan after the draw with Denmark. Given the hosts’ fragile defence and the visitors’ activity down the flanks, there is reason to expect not only goals but also a high number of corners.
