Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the World Cup 2026 qualifying match.
The match is crucial for both teams. Bolivia will try to use the advantage of the high-altitude stadium in La Paz to edge closer to a direct qualification spot for the World Cup. Paraguay, having gained momentum, aims to maintain their position in the top six, and after a sensational victory over Argentina (2:1), they travel to La Paz in high spirits.
Bolivia
Bolivia traditionally leverage their geographical advantage, delivering their best performances at home. Of the 12 points accumulated in the current qualifying cycle, nine were earned on home soil. However, the team's defence is a weak link, having conceded 25 goals in 11 matches— the worst record in the qualification. The return of Carmelo Algarañaz after suspension is expected to bolster their attack, but the absence of their defensive leader Jesús Sagredo severely complicates their challenge in the upcoming match.
Paraguay
Paraguay are one of the most defensively stable teams in the qualifying cycle. Over 11 matches, they have conceded only five goals, the second-best defensive record in the tournament, only behind Ecuador with four. However, the visitors' scoring prowess leaves much to be desired, with just six goals throughout the qualifiers. Nevertheless, they are unbeaten in their last five matches, and the encounter with Bolivia provides a chance to extend this run. The absence of suspended Omar Alderete and Adrián Cubas will weaken their defence, but the return of Juan Cáceres should help compensate for these losses. The visitors will need to handle not only the pressure from the opponent but also the thin air in La Paz.
Bolivia vs Paraguay Prediction
Bolivia are traditionally strong at home, yet Paraguay's current form inspires confidence in their ability to secure points. The visitors have demonstrated excellent defensive organisation and the ability to capitalise on counter-attacks. Despite the location of the match, we believe the visitors' quality will prevail, and they will at least avoid defeat.
