Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the 2026 World Cup Qualification match.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s surprise victory over Romania (1:0) in the first game propelled them into contention with Austria for the group’s top position. Cyprus, having achieved their expected win against San Marino (2:0), will now focus on a solid defensive performance in their away match in Zenica.
Bosnia and Herzegovina
After a poor showing in the Nations League A, expectations around Bosnia were understandably muted. Even in victory, their performance in Romania was limited: just 0.89 xG and a single shot on target, with most of their 34% possession spent soaking up pressure. To make matters worse, Edin Džeko was forced off at half-time with a facial injury and is unlikely to feature today — a major blow to their attacking presence.
Cyprus
Cyprus needed a full half to break down San Marino, eventually winning 2:0 after generating a healthy 2.81 xG and taking 26 shots. But the lack of clinical finishing exposed their technical limitations, even against a minnow. Manager Temur Ketsbaia is expected to stick with a 4-4-2, banking on disciplined defensive structure to frustrate the hosts.
Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Cyprus Prediction
Without Edin Džeko and with a natural tendency to play more reactively, Bosnia may struggle to break down a low block, especially against a side like Cyprus that will be content to sit deep and absorb pressure. The visitors won’t offer much going forward themselves, making this a likely tactical stalemate with few clear-cut chances.
