Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the English Premier League match.
The opening-round clash between Brighton and Fulham brings together two sides who established themselves as top-eight contenders last season. Brighton have serious ambitions of reaching Europe, while Fulham are aiming to continue their climb up the table. Both head into the campaign in good spirits after positive pre-season runs.
Brighton
Brighton finished eighth last season, just four points shy of the European places. Over the summer, the team won four of their friendlies and drew one, scoring at least twice in every match. At home last season, Brighton played with aggression, netting 30 goals and conceding 26, with only three defeats in 19 matches. The squad has seen some turnover: João Pedro, Pervis Estupiñán and Valentín Barco have departed, but the arrivals of Maxim De Cuyper, Olivier Boscagli, Charalampos Kostoulas, Thomas Watson and Diego Coppola offer fresh options.
Fulham
Fulham ended last season 11th in the Premier League with 54 points. The team played three friendlies in pre-season, winning all of them by an aggregate score of 8:3, including victories over Eintracht Frankfurt and Nottingham Forest. Away from home last term, Fulham recorded eight wins but also suffered seven defeats, and they posted an unusual stat line — 54 goals scored and 54 conceded.
Brighton vs Fulham Prediction
Both teams are showing early signs of attacking intent this season. Brighton have the edge with home advantage, but Fulham’s style means they are more than capable of causing problems. Expect both sides to find the net.
