Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the 2026 World Cup Qualifier match.
China's lacklustre start to the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers suggests the team may not make it to the tournament finals. Indonesia, too, face slim chances of advancing successfully, with three consecutive draws keeping them outside the top four in the group.
China
China's struggles on the field are largely attributed to a tough opening schedule in this qualification round. The potent attacks of Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Australia have combined for 12 goals against them. Errors in defence are expected to be fewer against less skilled opponents. However, in attack, the team are unlikely to cause a stir—managing just one shot on target in their 1:3 loss to Australia over 90 minutes.
Indonesia
Indonesia, meanwhile, played more effectively against the same opponents, drawing with Saudi Arabia (1:1) and Australia (0:0). Their goalkeeper, Maarten Paes, was frequently their saviour, making eight saves across those matches and earning the title of hero. Against Bahrain (2:2), they allowed their opponents plenty of attacking opportunities, but in the upcoming match against their rivals, Indonesia are likely to revert to a secondary, defensive approach.
China vs Indonesia Prediction
For October's challenge, China are without their leading forward, Wu Lei. At home against Indonesia, they will struggle to open up the game, and the other underdog is expected to remain subdued in attack as well.
