Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the 2026 World Cup Qualification match.
A relatively balanced group in the World Cup 2026 qualifiers gives Cyprus and San Marino a slim chance of causing an upset. The hosts are expected to take the initiative in this head-to-head encounter.
Cyprus
In the UEFA Nations League C group stage, Cyprus failed to make an impression against Kosovo and Romania, finishing without a single point. Back in November, the southerners managed 0.96 xG and only four shots on target in Bucharest, where Romania deservedly claimed a 4:1 victory. The majority of the squad are home-based players, while Ioannis Pittas from AIK and Andreou from Stelios Charleroi are not the kind of players who can single-handedly change the course of a match.
San Marino
Since September, San Marino have enjoyed rare success, securing victories against another fellow minnow, Liechtenstein (1:0 and 3:1). During their last major qualifying campaign for Euro 2024, they only managed three goals across ten matches, but they are accustomed to playing solidly at the back. In Larnaca, San Marino will likely rely on counter-attacks to try and grab a point.
Cyprus vs San Marino Prediction
A tempting bet here is "Both Teams to Score – No", as it’s difficult to predict Cyprus’ motivation and approach against San Marino. Over the course of the game, both teams are expected to focus more on defensive stability rather than attacking play.
