Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the World Cup qualifying match.
Germany opened their qualifying campaign with a shock 0:2 defeat to Slovakia, leaving the German side with no margin for error. They must bounce back in front of their supporters and claim a convincing three points. Northern Ireland, meanwhile, arrive on the back of a strong Nations League campaign and a 3:1 win over Luxembourg in their opening qualifier, though they tend to struggle against top-tier opposition.
Germany
Germany’s recent form has been inconsistent, alternating between strong and poor spells. They reached the semi-finals of the Nations League but then lost to Portugal (1:2) and France (0:2). Their World Cup qualifying campaign began disastrously with the 0:2 loss to Slovakia, as defensive lapses proved costly. Still, Julian Nagelsmann has a powerful squad at his disposal: the likes of Florian Wirtz, Joshua Kimmich, Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade can apply pressure on any defence.
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland topped their Nations League group, conceding only three goals in six matches. They started World Cup qualifying with a confident victory over Luxembourg, converting three of six shots on target. Up front, Jamie Reid — scorer against Luxembourg — and Dale Taylor, the team’s leading marksman in the Nations League, are key attacking threats.
Germany vs Northern Ireland Prediction
Germany must respond after the setback in Slovakia and should secure a home win. However, Northern Ireland’s compact defensive structure will make life difficult and should prevent a rout.
