Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the World Cup 2026 qualifying match.
After a draw with Australia (0:0), Saudi Arabia have slipped further behind Japan, but their primary aim should now be to maintain their second-place position in the standings to secure direct qualification for the World Cup. The match against Indonesia presents an opportunity to earn another three points, but the hosts are not as straightforward as they might appear.
Indonesia
Do not underestimate Indonesia's resilience. Recall the first-leg match in Jeddah (1:1), where the hosts even missed a penalty, albeit poorly taken. In their last outing, Indonesia played at home and conceded four goals to Japan (0:4)—their luck ran out. However, Japan are currently even stronger than Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia
While Saudi Arabia have fallen behind Japan, they have also managed to keep Australia at bay, as the Australians are eager to earn a World Cup spot. Saudi Arabia controlled possession (58%) but had very few shots: just three in total, with one on target. Australia, meanwhile, fired back with 13 attempts. The visitors were fortunate that their opponents were equally inaccurate, managing only two shots on target.
Indonesia vs Saudi Arabia Prediction
Considering Saudi Arabia's squandered opportunities and recalling the teams' previous encounters in the 2010s (two narrow victories for Saudi Arabia and one draw), we are confident that the Indonesian team, even if they lose, will do so by no more than one goal.
