Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the 2026 World Cup Qualification match.
It’s a top-of-the-table clash in Group A as Iran, sitting on 19 points, welcome second-placed Uzbekistan (16 points) to Tehran. The hosts need just a draw to mathematically secure their place in the next round, while Uzbekistan must win to draw level and keep their hopes of direct qualification alive.
Iran
Iran have been near-flawless in this qualifying campaign, unbeaten in all seven matches and fresh off a 2:0 win over the UAE. The attacking duo of Sardar Azmoun and Mohammad Mohebi have been key, scoring eight goals between them. However, the team's only dropped points came in a goalless draw away to Uzbekistan — a fixture that’s proven tricky historically, with three consecutive draws between these sides.
Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan are enjoying a strong campaign of their own, suffering only one defeat — a heartbreaking 3:2 loss to Qatar after conceding in the 102nd minute. They edged past Kyrgyzstan (1:0) last time out and boast a strong spine: Abbosbek Fayzullaev has been electric with three goals and an assist, Eldor Shomurodov (AS Roma) brings experience up front, and Ibrokhimkhalil Yuldoshev anchors the back line with composure.
Iran vs Uzbekistan Prediction
Iran’s home form makes them favourites, but Uzbekistan have been their bogey team of late. With qualification on the line and both sides likely to approach this with caution, another stalemate is a real possibility — and the value in the draw is hard to ignore.
