Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the English Premier League match.
The result of this fixture will have no bearing on the league standings. Both clubs have already been relegated to the English Football League Championship. At this point, they are simply playing for pride, aiming to secure what might be their final victory of the campaign.
Leicester City
Leicester City appear to have the edge. They are playing at home and have recorded twice as many wins as Southampton this season — four compared to two. However, their most recent victory came back in Matchweek 23, when they beat Tottenham Hotspur 2:1 away. That result momentarily lifted the team out of the relegation zone into 17th place. Since then, they have endured a dreadful run of eight consecutive defeats, with a 2:2 away draw against Brighton as the only interruption, followed by two further losses in the last two matchweeks.
Southampton
Southampton have been anchored to the bottom of the standings since Matchweek 11. Their last win also came some time ago — in Matchweek 24, when they overcame fellow relegation candidates Ipswich Town 2:1 on the road. Could they repeat such an away success? Possibly, but the team are currently without a win in ten matches, collecting just two draws during that stretch.
Leicester City vs Southampton Prediction
With both sides struggling to win, the smarter approach may be to focus on goals. Leicester City and Southampton are not only the bottom two teams in the English Premier League standings but also the league’s worst defences, having conceded 76 and 80 goals respectively. Errors are almost inevitable, which points towards a high-scoring affair — as has been the case in three of the last four matchweeks for both teams.
