Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Champions League qualifying match.
An all-Ireland clash is always charged with intensity, and football is no exception. Shelbourne currently hold a slender advantage midway through the first qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.
Linfield
The two countries follow different domestic calendars — Northern Ireland runs an autumn-to-spring schedule, while the Republic of Ireland plays spring-to-autumn. As a result, Shelbourne enjoy a clear edge in match fitness, which played a key role in their 1:0 victory in the first leg. They could have put the tie beyond doubt but struggled with their finishing. Despite registering 18 shots to 4, and 5 on target to 1, they only found the net once.
Linfield
After back-to-back runner-up finishes, Linfield reclaimed the Northern Irish Premiership title — doing so convincingly, with a 22-point margin over former champions Larne. However, the domestic campaign ended in April, and since returning from their extended break, Linfield have only managed routine wins over semi-professional opposition. They also lost the Super Cup match against Dungannon Swifts, failing to score in 120 minutes and missing once in the penalty shootout — hardly ideal preparation.
Linfield vs Shelbourne Prediction
Shelbourne’s consistent match rhythm gives them a strong chance of progressing to the second qualifying round, and they are unlikely to suffer defeat in the second leg.
