Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the English Premier League match.
The standout fixture of the second round. One of the main title contenders, Manchester City, host the reigning Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad, with plenty of intrigue surrounding the visitors’ ongoing rebuild.
Manchester City
Both clubs ran riot in the opening round, though Manchester City did it with greater authority (4:0), which puts them top of the table. Erling Haaland delivered a brace, new signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki scored their first official goals for the club, while Rayan Aït-Nouri impressed against his former teammates. It was a commanding performance, but conclusions should be measured given the opposition are likely to spend the season in the lower half of the table.
Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, also finished well down the league last season, largely because all focus was on the Europa League. Now Thomas Frank is building a new project. While fans and pundits await the record signing of Eberechi Eze, Tottenham Hotspur are showing early signs of stability. Yes, they eventually wilted under Paris Saint-Germain’s pressure in the UEFA Super Cup (2:3 on penalties), but the domestic opener against Burnley (3:0) was solid. Burnley did not offer much resistance, but Tottenham Hotspur looked organised defensively and clinical in attack, with Richarlison netting twice.
Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur Prediction
Manchester City will not find it easy to dismantle this Tottenham side. Last season, despite a long injury list, they demolished the champions (4:0) at the Etihad. A repeat feels unlikely, but we still don’t see Manchester City winning by more than a single goal.
