Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the EFL Cup match.
This game was originally scheduled for 24 September, but heavy rains in Wimbledon the day before severely damaged the pitch. Playing at Cherry Red Records Stadium became impossible, leading to the cancellation of AFC Wimbledon's subsequent match as well.
Newcastle United
Last Saturday, Newcastle prevented Manchester City from securing a win for the first time in five Premier League matches and emerged as the most dangerous club for Manchester City this season, recording the highest xG against them at 1.57. Anthony Gordon played a pivotal role in this draw—he won a penalty off Manchester City’s player Ederson Moraes and then successfully converted it. Despite 16 shots from the reigning champions, six on target, Newcastle United allowed an xGA of less than one (0.91). Only Chelsea managed to create less against Manchester City.
AFC Wimbledon
The reformed club hasn’t been left alone in their predicament. Their fans rallied to raise donations for the pitch repairs, and Newcastle generously donated 45% of the revenue from the match at St. James’ Park (£15,000). While the support is beneficial, the players have had almost no game practice for about 10 days. Their last match was a goalless draw away at Bradford City on 21 September in League Two. The team could become the only representative from leagues below the Championship in the Round of 16, but this is an immensely challenging task.
Newcastle United vs AFC Wimbledon Prediction
The break has been unusual for both teams. Two days of rest for Newcastle is quite short, so most of the squad will likely feature players who are usually benched. For AFC Wimbledon, the lack of match practice and the stress surrounding their pitch situation aren't ideal conditions. They will fight till the end, much like they did against Ipswich Town, but the disparity in strength is clear, and the home side is expected to win comfortably.
