Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Champions League qualifying match.
The Champions Path format offers little margin for error for both Pafos and Maccabi Tel Aviv as they aim to progress to the UEFA Champions League group stage. While neither side is expected to approach this tie passively, Maccabi Tel Aviv seem to have the advantage in terms of both form and squad depth.
Pafos
Pafos have struggled to find rhythm in their three pre-season friendlies held since early July. Their performances against AFC Wimbledon (2:2), Leyton Orient FC (1:0), and Orlando Pirates (1:1) lacked attacking cohesion. Over the summer, the squad brought in Anderson Silva and Jajá Diego to strengthen the attack — both could be included in the starting line-up for this first leg of the second qualifying round. However, Pafos also parted ways with their former first-choice goalkeeper Ivica Ivusic, and their current option, 31-year-old Neofytos Michail, has limited experience at this level.
Maccabi Tel Aviv
Two weekends ago, Maccabi Tel Aviv began their domestic season with a Super Cup clash against Hapoel Be'er Sheva, falling to a 1:2 defeat. Despite creating more chances (1.75-0.47 in xG), they failed to capitalise and came away empty-handed. The squad is unlikely to repeat such inefficiency in front of goal. Their current squad valuation stands at €33 million — nearly double that of their Cypriot counterparts, who are valued at €19.7 million.
Pafos vs Maccabi Tel Aviv Prediction
With home support, Pafos may be able to create several dangerous moments through experienced wide players Ken Sema and Mislav Orsic, who will be expected to play leading roles. However, Maccabi Tel Aviv remain a formidable opponent, and their superior bench strength could be the key to avoiding defeat.
