Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the European U21 Championship group stage match.
There is nothing left at stake for these teams. Both have missed out on the knockout round, having lost to the group favourites. What remains is a battle for pride—and in Slovakia U21’s case, an attempt to avoid finishing bottom on home soil.
Romania U21
Romania U21 currently sit at the foot of the group standings, having scored one fewer goal against Spain U21 (1:2) than Slovakia U21 did (2:3). In their defence, the team conceded their first goal only after the dismissal of centre-forward Vladislav Blanuta in the 84th minute—just seven minutes after he came on as a substitute. By the 88th minute, Romania U21 were already trailing.
Slovakia U21
Romania U21 at least featured at Euro 2023, whereas Slovakia U21 qualified for this youth continental tournament for the first time since 2017—and only by virtue of being the host nation. In over 30 years of independence, this marks just the third time Slovakia U21 have reached the final tournament. Their campaign can already be deemed respectable, having narrowly lost to both Spain U21 and Italy U21, who are among the medal contenders.
Romania U21 vs Slovakia U21 Prediction
In a friendly match in 2022, Slovakia U21 edged out Romania U21 (4:3). However, when results truly mattered, Romania U21 twice beat Slovakia U21 (2:0) during qualification for Euro 2013. While that was some time ago, we consider Romania U21’s experience sufficient to avoid defeat here. A draw would also suit Slovakia U21, helping them retain third place in the group standings.
