Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the 2026 World Cup Qualifier match.
On Tuesday, the Asian qualification round treats us to a clash between the two leaders of Group B. After an impressive start in this qualification phase, both South Korea and Iraq are vying for a spot in the 2026 World Cup finals. However, only the home side possess the resources necessary to consistently navigate the full qualification journey.
South Korea
Following a victory over Oman (3:1), South Korea began their October challenge with a successful trip to Jordan (2:0). In that match, the team led by Myung-bo Hong kept a flawless defence, even without Son Heung-min in the lineup. On the attacking front, Lee Kang-in and Hwang Hee-chan didn’t always find opportunities—registering five shots on target compared to two. It’s likely that Wolverhampton Wanderers’ winger will not recover in time for Tuesday’s home game, having been substituted due to injury before halftime.
Iraq
From the Asian Cup this winter, it was evident that Iraq’s preferred tactical approach involves reactive football. Over three autumn matches, they have not conceded a single goal. On Thursday against Palestine (1:0), Hussein Ali made the only successful strike, as the teams produced a combined three shots on target over 90 minutes.
South Korea vs Iraq Prediction
As they visit the group favourites, Iraq will once again adopt a tightly closed defensive stance. Before the Asian Cup kickoff in January, South Korea narrowly defeated Iraq in a friendly (1:0), and now they will need to manage without the services of Son Heung-min and Hwang Hee-chan.
