Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the European Under-21 Championship match.
A familiar rivalry resumes at the 2025 U21 European Championship as Spain U21 take on England U21. Two years ago, the Spanish squad narrowly claimed victory in the final, edging out their opponents 1:0.
Spain U21
This time, the clash comes earlier in the tournament as a result of England U21’s less convincing group stage performance compared to Spain U21. While the Spanish team didn’t secure a perfect record either, a 1:1 draw against Italy U21 in their final group match was sufficient to book their place in the knockout round. With qualification already within reach, the squad remained measured in their attacking play, recording just nine shots. Of their two attempts on target, one found the net.
England U21
England U21 collected only four points from a possible nine. They fell 1:2 to Germany U21. That followed a goalless draw against Slovenia U21, meaning their progression was ultimately secured thanks to the Czech Republic U21’s 2:0 win over the Balkan side in the final round of group matches.
Spain U21 vs England U21 Prediction
These group-stage outcomes have tempered expectations for England U21. They are lacking in standout individuals. The team’s only top-tier talent, Jude Bellingham, is currently unavailable due to commitments at the Club World Cup with Borussia Dortmund. Spain U21 might not boast stars from Barcelona or Real Madrid, but their strength lies in their collective organisation. In a high-pressure knockout fixture, a cautious and low-scoring encounter seems likely. The Spaniards appear slightly more balanced overall, particularly in terms of team chemistry, and we expect them to at least avoid defeat.
