Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Women’s Euro match.
Like all group winners in the opening stage, Spain secured three wins from three, but did so with greater dominance than their counterparts. The question now is whether Switzerland, buoyed by home support in Bern, can bring their run to a halt.
Spain (women)
Spain finished the group stage with a goal difference of +11, scoring 14 times and conceding just 3. Even Italy, who claimed second place in the group, were comprehensively beaten. They briefly took the lead in the 10th minute, but held the draw only until the 49th, when Patrícia Guijarro put Spain in front. The tournament’s standout performer so far has been Alexia Putellas, who has recorded three goals and three assists.
Switzerland (women)
Switzerland, by comparison, have scored only four goals overall. While they managed to find the net in each of their group matches, they only hit more than one goal in their 2:0 win over Iceland. That said, the squad has shown resilience at the back, conceding just three goals — matching the defensive record of Spain and outperforming Norway, who topped Group A.
Spain (women) vs Switzerland (women) Prediction
Despite their solidity, Switzerland have yet to come up against a team as strong as Spain in this tournament. Their past meetings with the Spaniards have ended in emphatic defeats — 1:5, 0:5, and 1:7. Based on the commanding group stage performances by Spain, another one-sided outcome appears likely. In our view, the best approach is to back the favourites to win in a high-scoring contest.
