Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the UEFA Champions League match.
Immediately following their home defeat to Sparta Prague last week (0:2), Malmö sold their leading midfielder Sebastian Nanasi to Strasbourg. It seems the Swedish club is no longer aiming for a spot in the Champions League group stage, as the level of their opponent appears higher, although this wasn't obvious before their first encounter.
Sparta Prague
While it can't be said that Sparta dominated in Malmö, the Czech side was more clinical with their chances. Excluding Stryger Larsen's own goal, they created 0,81 xG with 12 shots, despite having just 38% possession. On Saturday, the coaching staff rested their main squad against Slovácko (2:2) in the national league — the reserves didn't secure three points but still showed strong attacking play (2,52 xG and 17 shots on target).
Malmö
In their current European campaign, Malmö have been struggling: they lost to underdogs Klaksvik (2:3) and only got past PAOK in extra time (6:5). Henrik Rydström is missing four key players who are sidelined due to injuries, and with Sebastian Nanasi's departure, their attacking options have significantly diminished.
Sparta Prague - Malmö Prediction
In Prague, Sparta should have enough quality to maintain their comfortable lead. They are set to progress in the Champions League, while a weakened Malmö will head to the Europa League.
