Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the 2026 World Cup qualifying match.
In the early hours of Saturday, a battle for second place in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers will unfold, currently held by Colombia. Uruguay are viewed as the favourites for this encounter, but are they truly superior compared to the Copa America finalists?
Uruguay
Since mid-summer, Uruguay have played 10 official matches. Despite the hectic schedule, they have maintained a consistent style: solid defence with a limited number of players committed to attack. This explains their frequent low-scoring games, where even two goals are rare. In 7 out of their last 10 matches, Uruguay have played to a total under 1.5. Only three matches were exceptions, being highly productive games at the Copa America: Panama (3:1), Bolivia (5:0), Canada (2:2, penalties 4:3).
Colombia
In the same stretch of 10 matches, Colombia have not only won more often (six times compared to three) but have also seen more goals scored together with their opponents (total over 1.5 in 7 out of 10). There are, however, limits to their scoring, with a total under 3.5 happening eight times.
Uruguay vs Colombia Prediction
Colombia currently seem stronger than Uruguay. They only lose to the world champions in the Copa America final (0:1 in extra time) or at high altitude against Bolivia (0:1). While the visitors may not win, they are unlikely to let the hosts get too close. Uruguay will likely ensure a low number of goals.
