Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the international friendly match.
The international friendly in Columbus will be the fourth meeting between these national sides. The USA arrive on the back of a 0:2 defeat to South Korea, while Japan drew 0:0 with Mexico. For the hosts, this is another test as they prepare to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, whereas the visitors have a chance to reaffirm their excellent form.
USA
The Americans look disjointed: three defeats on the spin in friendlies, with a 1:8 goal difference. In 2025 there have already been six defeats, which is the worst tally in the past 14 years. The attack is in crisis: in seven matches this year they have not scored more than one goal. The USA have a positive record against Asian national sides (three wins in the previous four), yet defensive lapses persist. On American soil they have faced Japan only once, a 3:1 win in 2006, but that squad was very different.
Japan
The visitors saw their four-match run come to an end, yet their overall numbers are strong: 14 wins in 17 competitive fixtures since the AFC Asian Cup. Defence is the main asset: five clean sheets in their last six and only two conceded across eight matches this year. Moreover, they convert early leads into results, with 13 consecutive victories when they score first.
USA vs Japan Prediction
The USA look vulnerable at present: there is no balance between the lines, the attack is misfiring and the defence is inconsistent. Japan, by contrast, show structure, reliability and end product. The visitors will exploit the weaknesses at the back and will score at least once.
