Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the 2026 World Cup qualifier match.
The team’s delayed flight to the match against Venezuela might affect Argentina’s performance, but the class difference between the sides will be the decisive factor. Lionel Messi’s return to the team will allow Lionel Scaloni to loosen up the attack whilst providing more solidity at the back.
Venezuela
After a decent performance at the Copa America 2024, Venezuela collapsed in the qualifier against Bolivia (0:4). The team probably underestimated the Bolivian side, who are one of the underdogs of the qualifiers and have very slim chances of reaching the World Cup 2026. Against Uruguay (0:0), they played cautiously, switching to a four-man backline, and the top side was unable to field their strongest line-up.
Argentina
In September, Argentina played without Lionel Messi, as the football legend missed the international matches due to injury. Argentina followed Lionel Scaloni’s plan in the game against Chile (3:0), but in Colombia (1:2), they failed to produce their best performance. On the other hand, the slip-up was their first since November 2023, breaking their 12-game unbeaten run, during which they solidified their place at the top of the qualification table. Argentina conceded only four goals and scored twelve goals (second best in the competition).
Venezuela vs Argentina Prediction
Over the last five years, Venezuela have suffered four consecutive defeats against Argentina, conceding two or more goals in each of those games. The table-leaders will get theirs. Their captain is determined to achieve a positive result.
