Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the EFL Cup match.
Both teams enter this match in high spirits: Wycombe Wanderers have won their last three matches, while Aston Villa have triumphed in their last four. Who will extend their winning streak?
Wycombe Wanderers
Two victories in League One over Northampton Town away and Cambridge United at home (both 2:1) lifted Wycombe Wanderers from 16th to 9th position. In between, they produced a goal spree against Brighton U21 in the EFL Trophy (5:3). It's clear that they've been involved in high-scoring games recently, unlike the start of the season, where both teams to score only came through in two out of six matches. One of those was in the previous round of the League Cup, when Wycombe won 1:0 against Swansea City away, a Championship side known for their low-scoring games. The Welsh club didn't manage a single shot on target. Where can the goals come from?
Aston Villa
Aston Villa have no such scoring issues, having won their last four matches. In all six Premier League games, only Arsenal kept them from scoring, thanks to the goalkeeper. Their average in the league is two goals per game, and in the Champions League, they thrashed Young Boys (3:0). Confidence is not an issue. In the Premier League, they have scored 1.29 goals more than their xG, reflecting excellent conversion. However, Wycombe Wanderers do have a chance of scoring because Aston Villa's defence isn't as strong as their attack. They have conceded in every match, even against bottom teams like Everton and Wolverhampton, and according to xGA, Aston Villa rank third-worst, just after the aforementioned strugglers.
Wycombe Wanderers vs Aston Villa Prediction
A victory for the visitors seems highly likely, but to increase the odds, we suggest adding both teams to score. We understand it's a risky bet, but if it hits, the return could be nearly threefold. After all, the visitors’ defence is not flawless.
