Even though Max Verstappen couldn’t grab that crucial second place in Mexico, the bookmakers remain impressed by his pace in recent races. On paper, his chances of fighting for the title still seem like wishful thinking, but Verstappen continues to ramp up the pressure, pushing the McLaren duo to their limits.

Formula 1 Drivers' Championship Title Betting Odds

After the Dutch Grand Prix, it seemed that no matter how hard Max tried to drag performance out of his sluggish car, catching the front-runners and contending for another title was out of the question. But after Mexico, his deficit to Norris has shrunk to just 36 points — the smallest gap of the season. One slip from Lando and one win for Max could change the entire complexion of the championship.

And what about Oscar Piastri? His last three races have been outright disastrous. That infamous DNF in Azerbaijan and Norris’s seventh place allowed Max to slash the gap dramatically.

Since then, Piastri hasn’t been back on the podium — his best results are fourth and fifth places, which cost him the championship lead, even though Lando is only one point ahead.

Formula 1 veteran Damon Hill believes Piastri is going through a psychological dip that could cost him the title altogether:

Oscar led for a long time and had the advantage in points, but then he suddenly lost momentum. The only explanation is a shift in his mindset. Earlier in the season, he approached each race as a separate challenge — that was the right attitude. But now he’s being asked: ‘Do you think you might lose the championship?’ You can imagine how that feels. It’s mentally crushing.

Oscar Fades, Max Awaits a Miracle

Don’t be surprised if Max goes ultra-aggressive during the sprint, trying to grab as many points as possible, while Norris will likely avoid risky overtakes. Lando knows that the man he needs to watch more closely than Verstappen is his own teammate — Oscar Piastri, who’s desperate to reclaim the top spot.

Let’s not forget — the reigning champion has won in Interlagos two years running and considers this circuit one of the most compatible with his current car setup.

The tension inside McLaren is reaching new heights. Piastri has lost the aura of a potential champion, while Norris is now fully in sync with his car.

Former Haas boss Günther Steiner believes McLaren’s so-called “equal status” era is over and that the team will now back Lando in the title fight:

Oscar isn’t getting the same level of support from the team, and that’s enough to lose confidence — and the championship. At the start of the season, he wasn’t under pressure because he was unofficially the No. 2 driver. Officially they had equal footing, but Lando’s more experienced, older, and has been with McLaren longer. The team will back him now.

São Paulo Grand Prix History

Originally known as the Brazilian Grand Prix, the race has been held at Interlagos from 1972 to 2019. The 2020 edition was cancelled due to COVID-19, and from 2021 onward, it has officially been named the São Paulo Grand Prix.

Across all editions, Alain Prost remains the record-holder with six wins, followed by Michael Schumacher with four. Carlos Reutemann, Sebastian Vettel, and Max Verstappen share third place with three victories each.

McLaren leads the constructors’ list with 12 wins, ahead of Ferrari (11) and Williams (6).

The circuit itself was built in 1940 but didn’t become a regular part of the F1 calendar until the 1970s, hosting only junior series events before that.

São Paulo Grand Prix 2025 Prediction

Bookmakers offer a solid price for Verstappen to finish inside the top three — a highly realistic bet, given how well Interlagos’s corners suit the current Red Bull setup.

Yes, the era of the “downforce monster” Vettel-era RB cars is long gone, but the high-speed turns and hard braking zones remain Max’s playground.

Meanwhile, odds for Piastri to return to the podium have drifted significantly. It seems analysts share Hill and Steiner’s concerns — the golden days for Oscar might already be behind him, and McLaren’s focus is clearly shifting toward its more consistent lead driver.

By contrast, bookmakers are increasingly confident in Charles Leclerc’s podium prospects. Despite Ferrari’s countless errors throughout the season, Leclerc often finds a way to turn races around and claw back crucial points.

Sadly, the same can’t be said about his British counterpart. Once a serial record-breaker, Lewis Hamilton hasn’t claimed a single trophy this season.

His best finishes remain four fourth places. Mexico summed up his season — losing five spots on the grid and failing to mount any serious challenge to the Red Bull or McLaren drivers.

Watching his current struggles, it’s hard to shake the feeling that another season like this might be his last. It’s the perfect storm — age, a poor car, and waning motivation all catching up at once.
