It looks as though the new technical regulations have dramatically reshuffled the competitive order in the paddock. After pre-season testing, Russell has emerged as the bookmakers’ favourite, while odds on former champion Lando Norris have drifted as far as a remarkable 11/1

If the likely front-runners in the shape of Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari are fairly easy to identify, what to expect from McLaren remains a mystery not only to the fans, but seemingly to the entire papaya garage as well.

Throughout testing, the team was plagued by fuel delivery issues and excessive tyre wear. There were also the now familiar power unit overheating problems, which could easily end in a straightforward retirement after 15-20 laps on full tanks and at maximum revs.

That is why such long odds on Oscar Piastri and Norris should not come as a surprise. Against the backdrop of stronger rivals who, on top of everything else, are actively bending the rules, the McLaren car looks plainly undercooked and nowhere near the balance of Leclerc’s machine.

Of all the outsiders, Cadillac inspire the most confidence, with team bosses insisting preparations for the start of the season have gone very well. The same certainly cannot be said in the Aston Martin garage, where the Honda deal could yet turn into the biggest failure of the season, and there is every chance that neither car will even make the finish.

Audi also appear far more focused on endless attempts to rework the gearbox than on producing eye-catching numbers in pre-season testing. So, as is often the case after a technological reset in Formula 1, we may well be in for a thoroughly unpredictable campaign.

Are the bookmakers buying into George’s cheat-code engine?

To begin with, the FIA’s new technical regulations reduce the fuel compression ratio in the power units from 18:1 to 16:1. Crucially, this figure will be checked away from the track, in static conditions and at ambient temperature.

And it now seems the rumours that circulated in the media before the season have finally been confirmed. Mercedes and Red Bull have apparently found a loophole in the regulations by exploiting the expansion of materials under heat. Their alloys are said to be so responsive to temperature changes that they can automatically increase the compression ratio once the engine is fully warmed up.

At the same time, Leclerc, whose car had also been tipped to shine in 2026, is convinced that the Silver Arrows deliberately turned their engines down in testing so as not to draw too much attention from the FIA.

It is difficult to understand where we really are because our rivals are hiding their true pace. Believe me, they will show their maximum at the start of the season.

Even so, both Red Bull and Mercedes managed to stay within the limits during cold-engine inspections, so it is unlikely we will see repeats of last year’s disqualifications, such as the ones Ferrari received for altering the shape of the floor. The bookmakers, meanwhile, were clearly impressed by George’s pre-season form, which has made him the favourite heading into the Grand Prix.

Australian Grand Prix Prediction

The classic problem with pre-season testing is that it tells you very little about how the car will behave in race conditions with tyres that are not fully up to temperature and with full fuel loads. Even so, there is logic in Charles’ comments, and it cannot be ruled out that Mercedes and Red Bull may well have eased off on the third day of running in Bahrain to create the illusion of parity.

George, Max and Charles will probably battle it out for the first pole of the season, but will the man on pole be able to hold the position through the opening corners? At the moment, the much-discussed clipping raises more questions than excitement. Yes, the cars now hit peak speed by the middle of the straight rather than at the end, but as soon as the battery drains, they lose pace, often ruining fairly routine overtaking opportunities.

Against that backdrop, it is Ferrari’s car that looks the most stable and best dialled in. There is a strong feeling that Charles, even if he does not take pole, will at the very least be right in the fight for a podium finish. And if you already have George in first and Max in second in your mind, then 1.90 is a very decent price on Leclerc delivering.
