Sunderland vs Brentford: prediction & betting odds 30 August 2025

The Matchday 3 Premier League clash between Sunderland and Brentford will take place on August 30 at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland vs. Brentford: prediction and betting odds, statistics.

Sunderland

Regis Le Bris's side made an impressive return to the Premier League, thrashing West Ham 3-0 at home in the first round. However, they were brought back down to earth in their next match by Burnley, who secured a 2-0 home victory. Notably, Sunderland faltered in the second half of the last match, conceding both goals. The club's uncompromising streak in both of England's top divisions has now reached 10 matches (3 wins and 7 losses).

  • Exactly two or three goals have been scored in 5 of Sunderland's last 7 Premier League and Championship matches.
  • At least one team failed to score in 6 of Sunderland's last 8 matches in these two tournaments.
  • The club has not scored more than one goal in 6 of their last 7 home games in the Premier League and Championship.

Predicted lineup for Sunderland (4-3-3)

Robin Rufs – Daniel Ballard, Omar Alderete, Reinildo Mandava, Trai Hume – Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki, Habib Diarra – Simon Adingra, Chemsdine Talbi, Eliezer Mayenda.

Brentford

The Londoners also have 3 points after two rounds, having earned them on their home turf. Keith Andrews's side started with a 3-1 away defeat to Nottingham Forest, but in the next round, they secured their first Premier League win of the 2025/26 season, defeating Aston Villa 1-0 at home. This victory ended a brief 3-match winless streak in the league (1 draw and 2 losses).

  • The club has not lost in 8 of their last 10 Premier League matches (5 wins and 3 draws).
  • Brentford has a 11-match scoring streak away in the Premier League.
  • The Londoners have not lost in 10 of their last 12 away league games (7 wins and 3 draws).

Predicted lineup for Brentford (3-4-3)

Caoimhin Kelleher – Michael Kayode, Nathan Collins, Sepp van den Berg – Yegor Yarmolyuk, Kevin Schade, Mikkel Damsgaard, Jordan Henderson – Keane Lewis-Potter, Dango Ouattara, Igor Thiago.

Sunderland vs. Brentford: Match Prediction

The hosts face a tough challenge to survive in the Premier League. Despite the encouraging 3-0 win in the first round, it should be noted that they defeated West Ham, who have started the season poorly and are expected to remain in the relegation zone for some time. Sunderland relies heavily on their home ground, but even in the Championship, they struggled in their final home matches of the season, suffering four consecutive defeats.

The Londoners are comfortable on both home and away grounds. In their last 12 away Premier League matches, apart from losing to Nottingham Forest, they only lost to Newcastle (7 wins and 3 draws). Notably, these teams finished in the top six last season. Brentford consistently shows attacking prowess in away games.

My prediction: Brentford with a handicap (0)

Betting tips 30 August 2025

Sunderland opened with a surprise win, but the context soon became clear. Results for the promoted team have dipped, and before facing Brentford they are already seen as underdogs at home.

That 3:0 was against West Ham United, who look the least prepared side at the start of the season. In matchweek two the team faced fellow newcomers from the Championship, Burnley, with a chance to take points, but they lost 0:2 despite creating clear openings early on. It is also worth noting Burnley had a goal disallowed. There was pressure on the defender in that incident, but the lack of communication across the back line should concern Sunderland supporters. That is the downside of a wholesale rebuild.

Brentford have not embarked on a major recruitment drive. They are prioritising continuity, which is not straightforward after the architect of the project, Thomas Frank, moved to Tottenham Hotspur. His assistant, Keith Andrews, has stepped up as head coach and is trying to keep things steady. Some have therefore labelled the side as underdogs; it is too early to say. Even without the forward pair who delivered 39 goals, they beat Aston Villa (1:0) at home. A 2:0 win away to AFC Bournemouth in the second round of the EFL Cup also offers encouragement.

Even the departure of goalkeeper Mark Flekken, who made the most saves (133) in the English Premier League last season, has not derailed them. Caoimhín Kelleher is now in place, and he demonstrated his shot-stopping ability at Liverpool. Brentford remain well-structured, so we are backing them.
