Adam Williams presents his prediction for the UFC Fight Night 246 fight.
Jhonata Diniz
The Brazilian will deploy numerous stinging jabs, with quick low kicks allowing him to attack safely from mid-range. He'll retreat at any sign of danger and counter with powerful straight punches. If Derrick pushes him against the cage, Jhonata will throw a hook and shift positions. He'll attempt to escape any clinch but, if caught, will land some knee strikes and try to pin Lewis against the cage. For any attempts to close the distance, Jhonata will respond with a fierce overhand. He will try to unsettle his opponent with a light jab, then move in for the finish with uppercuts.
Derrick Lewis
Derrick will focus on single crosses to mask his advance. Once he closes the distance, the American will unleash heavy hooks to the body and head before retreating defensively. Using his considerable mass, Lewis can trap the Brazilian in a bear hug and hold him against the cage. He will follow up with body shots to sap his opponent's stamina. Using a sweep or throw, Derrick will attempt to bring Jhonata to the ground. If he gets on top, he'll unleash powerful ground and pound.
Betting Odds
The bookmakers favour the younger fighter, valuing his technique and agility, and recognizing his determination to maintain an unbeaten record. The odds for a Diniz win are 1/2.
Jhonata has the experience and skill to avoid Derrick's traps and feints. Betting on a Lewis victory carries odds of 33/20.
Jhonata Diniz vs Derrick Lewis Prediction
Jhonata might be able to outstrike Derrick from mid-range, but there will inevitably be close-quarter exchanges where the American will take the initiative. Although the Brazilian boxes well, his defence leaves much to be desired. Lewis possesses a powerful punch and unpredictability that Diniz might have trouble handling. Jhonata has no significant speed advantage and might struggle to escape Derrick's clinches. We believe the American will either catch his opponent with a short, knockout hook or find his finish in a clinch against the cage. Our favourite in this fight is Derrick Lewis.
