Review of the bookmaker Star Sports from Legalbet
Star Sports claim to be “The UK’s leading luxury bookmaker”. They can trace their roots back to 1999 when they launched as Star Racing. Now based in Brighton, Star Racing was rebranded in the summer of 2009 to reflect this growth and the wider portfolio of services offered to its clients.
They are a more upmarket bookmaker and do offer a more, discrete, personalised, high-quality service than many, as they put it “faceless chains”. They claim to accommodate some of the largest bets struck in the industry and regularly reward their clients for their loyalty.
Odds — bad
We calculated the margin for Star Sports by analysing the odds they offer and placed them into one of the following three categories:
From 1% to 5%: Good value
Over 5% to 7%: Average value
Over 7% to 10%: Poor value
We got our results by taking the "Match result" odds and also the over/under 2.5 goals odds for different matches in different football leagues. Getting the average results using this method, we were able to obtain the margins for each league and the overall betting margin for the bookmaker.
Star Sports has an overall average margin of 7.62% for football and falls in the average category. In the first section with Premier League and Championship, the margin is at 6.61%. The second section with Spanish La Liga and Italian Serie A, the margin is at 6.48%. Finally, taking matches from around the rest of the world into account, the margin is at 9.78%.
Range of Sports and Markets - Good
Star Sports speciality is Horse racing and this is where they have the most extensive coverage. As well as a full card for the UK and Irish races they also have US and European meetings covered with Early as well as Starting Prices.
Football is also well covered with all major countries and leagues represented. The coupon layout is attractive and a nice feature is that odds changes are displayed live and flashed up for you as you watch making it very clear what is a market mover.
Once you open a game which you want to investigate you will find a very simple to use layout, one of the best we have seen, with the most popular options at the top (who will win, the correct score, etc) and more niche markets at the bottom (Will both teams score in both halves). The Player markets are well covered with odds available on First Goal Scorer, Anytime Scorer, and Hat-trick all priced up.
In-Play Betting - Average
The “In Play” here is average, a highlight is that they cover virtually every football match being played. There is no Horse Racing covered which is the only downside. Also, the televised streaming of events could be improved, although the game data and current state of play screen is better than most and easy to get a feel for how the game is going. It is not just football you can bet on though they also include more minor sports such as snooker, ice hockey, table tennis, etc.
