If the two losses in a row worry you, look closely at the names. Since joining the UFC, Allen has only been beaten by Max Holloway and Movsar Evloev, pushing both in very competitive fights.

And against the more straightforward knockout threat in Silva, the Brit looks like the more interesting pick. His main job is to keep disrupting the Brazilian, drawing him into swinging at air. On top of that, Allen’s wrestling and takedown defence have clearly improved over his last couple of fights. If he was stuffing Evloev’s attacks, he can absolutely counter Jean’s potential shots.

Allen’s trademark body combinations could be vital too, as could the classic feint upstairs before switching to the body. Those punches caused Evloev plenty of problems, and if Allen lands them consistently here, he can drain Silva’s gas tank and force him to slow down.

Unlike Allen, Silva can’t really point to a list of big names on his record, unless you’re counting Bryce Mitchell or Drew Dober as elite scalps. The Brazilian does have genuine power, and it works well alongside a solid ground game.

But his striking depth, and his round-by-round planning, leave a lot to be desired. Silva can take someone’s head off when he gets angry and charges forward, but as the Lopes fight showed, those are also the moments he becomes most vulnerable.

Against Allen, though, he may not be able to abandon his usual berserker approach. If he doesn’t constantly close distance with long, aggressive combinations, he’ll bleed points during extended pauses and failed attempts to reach the Brit.

Given how average Silva’s early attacking work looked against Lopes, it’s hard to treat him as a clear-cut betting favourite.

Yes, he’ll be dangerous in the clinch and at close range, and there’s every chance he tries to drag this into the grappling exchanges to avoid wasting energy chasing Allen around. But holding Allen down, let alone simply getting him to the mat, is a brutal task.

And while backing Arnold carries risk, the price is far more appealing than taking Silva at 1.40. Allen’s sharp, fast, accurate attacks can bank rounds, at least over the first two. Whatever the critics say about his measured style and lack of one-punch power, he hasn’t declined. If anything, he looks even more precise and composed.
