The Most Anticipated Transfers of the Premier League Winter Window
Manchester City are back on the market, while Liverpool keep spending.
The winter transfer window in England will open on 1 January 2026 and remain open until midnight on 3 February. Unlike other top European leagues, Premier League clubs are not afraid to overpay mid-season and to integrate a large number of new faces without the benefit of a pre-season. In the 2024/25 campaign, for instance, top-flight English clubs spent around £400 million — almost three times more than in the season before last.
Ahead of another round of Premier League spending, we have picked out five of the most intriguing transfer sagas that could reach their conclusion as early as this winter.
Does the Pharaoh Stay at Liverpool?
After the controversy surrounding Mohamed Salah’s interview, it seemed the Egyptian’s days at Anfield were numbered. The situation was eventually smoothed over: Salah apologised to Arne Slot and his teammates, came off the bench against Brighton, and then headed off to AFCON-2025. Talk of a move has quietened down at least until his return from the tournament, and there is a growing sense that the Egyptian could well stay at Liverpool until the summer.
Still, it would be no surprise if the club’s hierarchy chose not to stand in his way should a lucrative offer arrive. Liverpool pulled off a similar deal last winter with Darwin Núñez — the Uruguayan is now plying his trade at Al-Hilal with mixed success, but at least enjoying regular minutes. Liverpool could offload an unpredictable Egyptian who has lost form and free up funds for January reinforcements.
There are also occasional whispers linking Salah with MLS, but this option is not worth serious consideration. Salaries are lower than in Saudi Arabia, and the chances of returning to European football from across the Atlantic are significantly slimmer.

James Trafford: Broken Promises and the Shadow of Donnarumma
After an outstanding 2024/25 season at Burnley, James Trafford was swiftly brought back to the Etihad, with Manchester City taking into account Ederson Moraes’ inconsistency and the Brazilian’s desire to move on.

On paper, the deal looked perfect. Pep Guardiola landed a young and reliable goalkeeper, while Trafford was given the chance to prove himself at the highest level and challenge Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope for England’s number one spot. However, the unexpected signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma forced the Englishman onto the bench.
Trafford has played just seven matches this season, and there are serious doubts that Pep will trust him with the number one shirt. Donnarumma arrived as a Champions League winner and one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and after a short adaptation period he is now third favourite for the Golden Glove.
Despite this, Guardiola has no intention of letting Trafford leave, planning to use him in the cup competitions and continuing to back him publicly. At the same time, the Spaniard openly admits that he cannot promise anything, leaving James to wait patiently for his chance.
Several Premier League clubs are monitoring the situation, but a move does not look realistic. Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are well covered between the posts thanks to the excellent form of Nick Pope and Guglielmo Vicario.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have also been mentioned, but with the club highly likely to be relegated to the Championship, such a move would hardly appeal to the player.

Sterling’s Escape from Stamford Bridge
Raheem Sterling’s arrival marked the beginning of the Todd Boehly era at Chelsea, yet few now remember that the 31-year-old winger is still on the club’s books, despite not being registered for a single competition this season.
Sterling was predictably deemed surplus to requirements by Enzo Maresca after an underwhelming loan spell at Arsenal, where he managed two assists in 17 games, and following the arrivals of Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens. Ben Chilwell found himself in a similar position at the start of the season, but the wing-back swallowed his pride and moved to Strasbourg.
Crystal Palace are considered the leading contenders for Sterling’s signature. Oliver Glasner lacks depth on the bench, and a player like Raheem would fit that role perfectly. Chelsea are also unlikely to dig their heels in over the fee — earning a few million for an unwanted player is preferable to losing him for nothing when his contract expires in June 2027.
Bayern Munich have also been loosely linked. The move looks questionable, given the club’s abundance of wide options: Jamal Musiala is due back soon, while Vincent Kompany continues to promote young players to the first team. A switch to the German giants would be ideal for Sterling himself, but whether he is needed in Munich is another matter.
Fulham could be another sensible option for a career reset. Sterling may not be able to terrorise full-backs like Samuel Chukwueze or Adama Traoré, but his experience and technique would still offer quality either out wide or just off the striker. However, Fulham are unlikely to match even half of his current wages.

“Free Kobbie Mainoo”
The 20-year-old midfielder was one of the few bright spots of Manchester United’s troubled 2023/24 season, cementing his place in central midfield and earning 10 England caps. Since the arrival of Ruben Amorim, Mainoo’s role has diminished sharply. This season he has played just 229 minutes and has yet to start a single match.

Amorim clearly favours the Mason Mount–Bruno Fernandes–Manuel Ugarte trio, leaving Mainoo either on the bench or out of the squad altogether. The manager’s stance even prompted the midfielder’s brother to appear near the advertising boards at Old Trafford wearing a shirt with a very pointed message.

With Mainoo hoping to make England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, a winter exit is already worth serious consideration. Bookmakers see Napoli as the frontrunners. The player could well be inspired by Scott McTominay’s story, having flourished in Serie A after leaving United.
Chelsea are never far away in situations like this. They have had mixed success snapping up players deemed surplus to requirements in Manchester, such as Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho. On paper, Mainoo would slot in perfectly alongside Moisés Caicedo, and if the opportunity arises, Chelsea are likely to pounce.
Tottenham Hotspur are another option, but given the club’s instability and the possibility of Thomas Frank’s departure, other destinations look far more appealing.

Antoine Semenyo: Manchester or Liverpool?
The biggest question of the winter is whether Semenyo will make the move to a top club now or whether his transfer will be revisited at the end of the season. The 24-year-old winger has become a star at Bournemouth and is regarded as one of the Premier League’s standout performers this campaign, with eight goals and three assists in 16 games.
Liverpool are considered the favourites to land Antoine, having shown this season that they are willing to spend big. The process could be accelerated by Alexander Isak’s injury, which is expected to sideline him for several months with a suspected leg fracture. On the other hand, recent signings have yet to deliver, and departures may be required before committing such a substantial fee.
Pep Guardiola has never shied away from January business. Reports suggest Manchester City wanted to sign Semenyo in the summer but were unable to get the deal done. What remains unclear is how the Spaniard would fit Antoine into his current setup.
Completing the trio of suitors is Manchester United. Amorim is keen to bring the winger in, especially given the inconsistency of the current attacking options such as Benjamin Šeško, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. United are prepared to spend — the challenge is convincing Semenyo to join a club still searching for stability.

Some of these stories could be resolved as early as the beginning of January, while others are likely to run right up to deadline day. And there are plenty of other intriguing potential moves to keep an eye on — Troy Parrott and Nathan Aké are sure to resurface in the transfer rumour mill more than once.
