The 21-year-old Filipino player is improving her career results and has already risen to 28th in the world rankings. At the start of the Washington tournament, Eala beat Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in a lengthy three-set match, 4:6, 6:4, 6:1. That match lasted 2.5 hours. Alexandra maintained a high tempo and held the advantage in the deciding set, but such a long and demanding match may have caused significant fatigue ahead of a meeting with another left-hander.
The players met recently — in April 2026 at the clay-court tournament in Stuttgart — and Fernandez won in two sets, 6:1, 6:4. Eala expended considerable energy the previous day, while Fernandez's left-handed style and first-round serving figures (70% first serves in) could enable the Canadian to match that level of play. Given Fernandez's current results in Washington, we can assume she is capable of covering the positive handicap.
