Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the EFL Cup match.
Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough's defenders continue to make errors at the back for the second game in a row. They are to blame for Portsmouth's second goal, and the goalkeeper was caught out of position as well. The match against Derby County had fewer missed opportunities. Back then, they had 20 shots on goal and managed 1.55 xG, while against Portsmouth, it went up to 30 shots (seven on target) and 2.90 xG. Their finishing was slightly better this time, but the situation remains dire. They held around 70% possession in both matches, but it hasn't been beneficial so far. Middlesbrough could easily have nine points by now, but instead, they have four. Perhaps they are missing the calm presence of their experienced defensive midfielder and captain, Jonny Howson, who suffered a leg injury in the first round of the League Cup against Leeds United.
Stoke City
The third round of the Championship could also be seen as a case of bad luck for Stoke City. They hit the woodwork twice in their match against West Bromwich. The team played more cohesively than their upcoming opponents. Out of seven shots, two were on target, which was enough for one goal. It is worth noting that Stoke City have been active in attack, although not particularly successful. They tried loading West Bromwich's penalty area with crosses, but only one out of 17 was accurate. In the upcoming fixture, the coaching staff are likely to focus on defence, hoping to capitalise on counterattacks. Even in their home game, Stoke City couldn't break past 50% possession.
Middlesbrough - Stoke City Prediction
Stoke City haven't lost to Middlesbrough in their last four meetings, with the last two ending 2:0. Given the team's poor finishing, we wouldn't be surprised if the trend continues. Stoke City need fewer attempts to score.
