Adam Williams presents his prediction for the UFC 312 fight.
Zhang Weili
Zhang Weili will aim to counter the challenger’s advances by slipping to the side and landing hooks from blind angles. She will also look for a powerful head kick when Suarez begins to retreat. Zhang will mix combinations to the body and head, timing her shots as Suarez moves forward. If she anticipates Suarez’s takedown attempt early enough, Zhang will target the lead leg with a low kick or fire a quick one-two to the head before Suarez can close the distance. If taken down, Zhang will immediately work to create space, pushing Suarez away to regain her footing.
Tatiana Suarez
Tatiana Suarez will look to establish control of the centre of the octagon with straight punches and high kicks. She will mix body kicks and takedown threats, staying aggressive despite the risk of taking a few strikes from the champion. Suarez will engage in the clinch and use sharp knees to the midsection to wear Zhang down. If Zhang throws a kick, Suarez may attempt to catch her leg, converting it into a takedown or pressing the champion against the fence. Once on the ground, Suarez will focus on positional control, patiently waiting for an opening to exploit any mistakes Zhang makes in grappling exchanges.
Betting Odds
Bookmakers expect a competitive fight, as Zhang is well-rounded but appears to have a clear disadvantage in grappling against Suarez. The odds for a Zhang victory stand at 19/20.
Despite only having ten MMA fights, Suarez’s impressive wrestling credentials and undefeated record make her a serious contender, with odds of 17/20.
Zhang Weili vs Tatiana Suarez Prediction
Zhang will rely on her experience and cardio, consistently landing short, sharp combinations. She may even engage in clinch battles rather than outright avoiding takedown attempts. While Suarez is physically strong, she is unlikely to match Zhang in speed and endurance. If Suarez secures early takedowns, she could take a round or two, but Zhang is skilled enough to neutralise her in grappling exchanges. Over the course of the fight, Zhang’s striking volume and pace should give her the edge. Zhang to win via decision.
