How the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout bracket will look
The new format at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has brought in an extra knockout round, the round of 32. Some favourites will be lucky enough to face a clearly weaker opponent, while others will have to take on a solid mid-ranking side.

So what is the catch with the expanded number of teams, and how are national sides placed in the bracket? We explain it all in this article.
2026 FIFA World Cup knockout bracket
The updated format has changed the way teams are placed in the knockout rounds. How did it work before? Group winners played runners-up, which was simple and clear.
Now the situation has changed, with the round of 32 introduced, and it also includes teams that finished third in their groups.
Teams officially qualified for the knockout stage: Germany, the USA, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, France, Norway, South Africa, Switzerland, Canada, Bosnia, Brazil, and Morocco.
Third-place table. Eight of the 12 best national teams that finish third in their groups now also qualify for the knockout stage, where they will face the winners of groups A, B, D, E, I, G, K and L. It looks like this:

Let us explain how this system works in practice:
Germany (1E) have already secured their place in the knockout stage as group winners and will face a third-place team from one of the following groups: A, B, C, D or F. Germany’s opponent is determined alphabetically. At the moment, that means the team finishing third in Group A.
If the third-placed team from Group A does not make the round of 32 via the third-place table, Germany get the next national side on the list, 3B, and so on.
The traditional crossovers remain. The winners and second-place teams from groups C, F, H and J play each other:

This is where the most eye-catching round of 32 match could take place: Argentina will face either Spain or Uruguay.
Matches between second-place teams. National sides finishing second will have to play each other, and we already know which groups this applies to:

2D — 2G.
Eight group winners will receive manageable opponents in the round of 32, but all of this looks slightly unfair on the other four. They will have to face teams that finished second, who are highly likely to be stronger on paper.
A side such as Morocco or Scotland from Group C would be a far more awkward opponent in the opening knockout round than Cape Verde or Ghana. Under certain circumstances, Argentina could also have to play Spain as early as the round of 32.
National teams may have valid questions, but FIFA has yet to offer a clear explanation on this point.

Thanks to the extra knockout round, we are set for the longest knockout stage in World Cup history: 22 days.
