Russo breaks English Women's Champions League scoring record
Arsenal striker Alessia Russo became the highest-scoring English player in Women's Champions League history with a hat-trick in a 3-0 league-phase win over Benfica at Meadow Park. She took her competition tally to 23 goals, surpassing Fran Kirby's record of 21.
Russo's first-half opener drew her level with Kirby before a glancing header from Steph Catley's corner made her the outright record holder. She completed her hat-trick from the penalty spot after Catarina Amado fouled Caitlin Foord. Arsenal manager Renee Slegers told Disney+ that it was a privilege to work with Russo.
The win moved Arsenal into second place in the Women's Champions League table. Russo captained Arsenal for the second time in her career. Foord's stoppage-time effort was ruled out because Russo had been offside in the build-up.
- Arsenal's victory over Benfica followed their north London derby win against Tottenham, giving them consecutive victories for the first time that season.
- Arsenal had beaten Barcelona to win the Women's Champions League title in 2025. Their next European fixture was scheduled away to Barcelona on 12 November 2026.
