A participant in the 2024 Olympics, who was doused in petrol and set alight by her boyfriend, has passed away in hospital

Rebecca Cheptegei, a participant in the upcoming 2024 Olympics from Uganda, has tragically passed away following severe burns she sustained in a conflict with her boyfriend. This was confirmed by the national Olympic committee of Uganda.

On Sunday, Rebecca was admitted to hospital with burns covering 75% of her body. The incident occurred at the athlete's home in Kenya, where during an argument related to a property dispute, the man doused Rebecca with flammable liquid and set her on fire. Despite the medical team's efforts to save her life over several days, all of her organs failed by Wednesday evening.

At the Paris Games, the 33-year-old runner finished in 44th place in the marathon event.
