Bach to step down as IOC President at end of term

President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach announced during a session of the organization that he will not seek re-election upon the expiration of his current term.

«After deep reflection and extensive discussions, including with my family, who are present here in the hall, I have made the decision not to extend my mandate beyond the term set by the Olympic Charter», — Bach stated to reporters.

Bach has requested that the IOC Executive Board schedule presidential elections for March 26, 2025. The new president will officially take office in June of the following year.

At the 141st IOC session held in Mumbai last October, several members proposed amending the Olympic Charter to allow Thomas Bach to be re-elected for another term. However, this amendment was not passed during the 142nd session in Paris in July.

Thomas Bach has led the IOC since 2013 for an initial eight-year term, followed by a four-year extension. His current term will conclude in 2025.
