Federer on Sinner's doping test situation: «A controversy that tennis doesn’t need»

Twenty-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer has responded to the doping allegations surrounding the world number one, Italy's Jannik Sinner.

«Such news is not what we want to see in our sport, regardless of whether he is guilty or not, or if it was him or someone else. It’s a controversy we don’t need.

I understand that this is a complex situation. It is a sheer nightmare for any athlete and their team to face such accusations and issues, as we fill out these forms every day. And it stays with you. Every morning when you wake up, you wonder, ‘Is someone outside waiting to check me?’ So, yes, it is indeed difficult.

I think we all believe that Jannik has done nothing wrong, but the potential inconsistency lies in the fact that he avoided suspension until they were 100% sure of what was going on—that is the question that needs answering. But we must trust the process and everyone involved in it,» Federer stated, as reported by Today.

On August 20, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) released a statement revealing that Sinner had tested positive for doping twice in March. However, Jannik has managed to avoid disqualification.
