Greenwood scores brace in debut official match for Marseille

Marseille celebrated a resounding 5-1 victory over Stade Brestois 29 in their opening match of the French Ligue 1. The encounter took place at the Stade Francis Le Blé in Brest.

For the Provençals, Mason Greenwood scored a brace with goals in the 3rd and 31st minutes (the latter being a penalty), while Luis Enrique added another two goals in the 26th and 48th minutes. Elye Wahi also found the net, converting a penalty in the 69th minute. The hosts managed to respond with a goal from Mahdi Kamara in stoppage time (45+5'). Brest's forward Romain Del Castillo failed to convert an 11-meter penalty in the 9th minute of the match.

Both Greenwood and Wahi made an impressive debut for Marseille. The Provençal club secured the 22-year-old Englishman from Manchester United for €26 million plus an additional €5 million in potential bonuses, while they paid Lens €25 million for the 21-year-old Frenchman.

The game also marked Roberto De Zerbi's first official match at the helm of Olympique. The Italian took over the team in June.

Marseille earned three points and currently sits at the top of the Ligue 1 table, while Brest, with zero points, is positioned at the bottom in 18th place.

In the next round, the Provençals will host Reims, while the Breton side will face Lens away. Both matches are scheduled for August 25.
