Lille president provides update on midfielder Gomes after losing consciousness in match against Reims

Lille president Olivier Létang has given an update on the condition of midfielder Angel Gomes, who suffered a head injury during the away match against Reims in the opening round of Ligue 1.

At the beginning of the game, the 23-year-old midfielder collided with home player Amadou Koné while contesting a high ball, resulting in him falling to the ground and losing consciousness. Medical staff attended to the Englishman for approximately half an hour before he was carried off on a stretcher. Due to this incident, an additional 34 minutes were added to the first half of the match.

"News about Angel is good. We were genuinely scared; at one point, we feared the worst. Initially, the information wasn’t very promising. In the end, he left the stadium conscious. He was able to understand, speak, and could move his arms and legs. The tests conducted at the hospital have provided us with very reassuring results.

As proof that Angel is doing well, he has already asked whether he will be able to play in the match against Angers next Saturday. We were very frightened. We will wait and see how the night goes, but most likely, this story will have a happy ending. We are very pleased for him.

We saw the players seemingly in a panic calling for the doctors, and we observed that Angel was unable to move. There were many reasons to be concerned. However, it seems everything is ending quite well. We will wait for the final test results to understand when he can rejoin the team," Létang said in an interview with DAZN.

Lille went on to secure a 2-0 victory against Reims. In their next league match, the Dogs will host Angers at home.

Angel Gomes is a product of Manchester United's academy and joined Lille in 2020. Last season, he scored two goals and provided ten assists in 45 appearances for the club. His contract with the French team runs until the summer of 2025.
