Ronaldo on Portugal's Euro 2024 performance: "People had exaggerated expectations"

Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo has stated that he does not consider his national team's result at the 2024 European Championship a failure.

To recap, Portugal's campaign ended at the quarter-final stage, losing to France on penalties with a score of 3-5 after a goalless draw in regular time.

"At the European Championship, fans had exaggerated expectations for our team, which ultimately were not met. However, I believe that the result was not a disappointment; it's part of the team’s growth process, which needs time, and the coach needs time to impart his style of play.

From my perspective, it was a positive tournament. Nobody likes to lose, but for me, our performance at the Euros was not a failure—it was more of a victory. If we had won the penalty shootout against France, we would have progressed to the semi-finals, and everyone would have been pleased. We would then have faced Spain. So I see no reason for disappointment," Ronaldo told SAPO24.

Spain emerged as the champions of Euro 2024, defeating England 2-1 in the final.
