Tiafoe Backs Sinner Amid Doping Scandal

American tennis player and world No. 20 Frances Tiafoe has voiced his support for Italian and ATP world No. 1 Jannik Sinner amid a doping scandal.

— You were the last to play against Jannik before these news surfaced, and after the final, you spoke highly of him and his game. What are your thoughts on all these developments?

— Of course, he’s an incredible player. The governing bodies have made their decision: he’s allowed to play. That’s all I can really say on the matter. I wish him all the best at the US Open and look forward to competing in the tournament myself, — Tiafoe stated at a press conference.

It was previously reported that Sinner tested positive for doping twice in March this year, but avoided suspension. The athlete was able to prove that the anabolic steroid clostebol entered his system accidentally. Giacomo Naldi had treated a cut on his hand with a spray containing the substance before a massage and had not used gloves during the procedure. The spray was provided to the physiotherapist by Umberto Ferrara.

The US Open will be held in New York from 26 August to 8 September.
