The number of elite forwards at this World Cup is off the scale, and so far they are all living up to the billing. As the tournament moves closer to the final, the superiority of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé has become clear. The award is likely to come down to those two.

Messi failed to score in the quarter-final and lost his advantage over Mbappé, who duly found the net against Morocco. The forwards are now level, and it may all come down to the final once again.

Haaland and Norway are out of the World Cup, while Mikel Oyarzabal was once again quiet against Belgium. Kane is still in the race although only just. In recent matches he has handed over his goalscoring duties to Jude Bellingham, who has rediscovered the form of his debut season in Madrid and is scoring goal after goal.

In it for the long haul: Mbappé, Kane and Messi

The players’ positions in the betting will keep changing, but the main trio are likely to remain near the top until the very end of the World Cup.

Mbappé. The all-time leading scorer for the France national team was poor only for the first 45 minutes in America. After that, we saw Kylian who won the Golden Boot in Qatar and was one of the standout players in Russia.

With Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembélé supplying him, Mbappé can realistically move towards double figures in the goals column and become the first player in history to win the Golden Boot at two World Cups.

Kylian has scored in every knockout round and, if he keeps that streak going in the final, he will match Messi’s achievement from 2022. At this pace, reaching double figures should be no problem for Mbappé.

Kane. The England striker was cursed by a Ghanaian witch doctor and failed to score against Ghana, but he responded in style: a goal against Panama, a brace against DR Congo and another against Mexico. Harry became England’s all-time leading scorer at World Cups. 

Norway managed to take the Englishman out of the game, but the less physically imposing Argentina defence may not be able to pull off the same trick, and Harry could yet get himself back into the race.

Bellingham has emerged as a surprise contender. He is level with Mbappé as the leading scorer in the knockout stage, with both Real Madrid stars scoring four goals. Jude has six goals overall, the same as Kane, but bookmakers do not appear to have much faith in the Englishman. He is priced at 25/1 to win the race, while some bookmakers have not even opened a separate market for him.

Messi. It would be foolish not to praise the great Lionel Messi, who is tearing through this World Cup, but it is also worth remembering the calibre of the opposition and the style of the national team. The matches against Cape Verde and Egypt were another Lionel Messi masterclass, but they also showed that Argentina cannot always rely on his genius. That is certainly true when it comes to penalties: Messi had his first shot at the Swiss goal only in the 92nd minute. If the same pattern repeats itself in the semi-final, Mbappé will have a sizeable head start.

Lionel is unlikely to take aim at Just Fontaine’s record of 13 goals at the 1958 World Cup, and odds of 7/5 look a little short. Still, there is little doubt that the Argentine will stay in the race until the end.

The Golden Boot and the new World Cup format: what's the catch? 

The expanded World Cup has already raised more questions than answers. Given the calibre of some of the teams that qualified for the tournament, the group stage can look like a warm-up for elite forwards, where scoring ten or more goals becomes possible.

The highest-scoring Golden Boot winners of the 21st century are Mbappé, with eight goals at the 2022 World Cup, and Ronaldo, with eight at the 2002 World Cup. The overall record belongs to Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals in 1958.

The weaker group opponents have already played their part. In the second round, almost all the big names, including Messi, Mbappé, Haaland and Ronaldo, left the pitch with a brace. Only Kane faltered, although he had scored twice in the opening match. 

On the one hand, the quality of football and the level of teams in some matches are comparable to qualifiers. On the other, the Golden Boot race becomes far more interesting.

2026 World Cup Golden Boot: Legalbet prediction 

Mbappé is rightly among the main favourites in the Golden Boot race. His link-up with Olise and Dembélé looks like one of the most dangerous combinations at the tournament, while consistency and a ruthless eye for goal remain Kylian’s main weapons.

Haaland will drop out of the race simply because Norway will not go deep enough, while Kane, as it turns out, is rather vulnerable to curses from African shamans.

With Messi, things are not quite so straightforward either. It would be foolish to deny the Argentine’s greatness, but there are still questions over the competitiveness of his national team.

Kylian also has personal motivation. Messi denied the Frenchman the honour of breaking Klose’s record, even though Mbappé had been the favourite to do it. Kylian has a response available: to become the first player in history to finish as top scorer at two World Cups and to take away Lionel’s chance of winning the Golden Boot for the first time in his career.
