Gornik Zabrze
In the second leg of the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round, Polish side Gornik Zabrze will host Hungarian side Ferencvaros at the Ernest Pohl Stadium 13 August 2026 at 13:00 EDT / 10:00 PDT.
Gornik Zabrze need to overturn the one-goal deficit they incurred a week ago.
Górnik have been through this before. It did not work out. In Champions League qualifying, they lost 0:1 away to Fenerbahçe and then managed only a 1:1 draw at home. We would not want the same thing to happen again.
It is normal that the Polish club could not get past such a wealthy opponent at the first attempt. Górnik have not played in European competition since 2018, or in the Champions League since 1988. If they were not reaching Europe, it means they were not competitive even domestically. They have started the new Ekstraklasa season well, with two wins from two. How do they beat Ferencváros? They need to go forward, but cautiously, so as not to concede a second. And they need to hit the target more often, rather than just once as they did in Budapest.
Ferencváros won the first leg, but they are not regarded as clear favourites to progress. They could have scored more than once from 15 shots. However, the Hungarian club gained invaluable experience that Saturday — they were tested by Real Madrid themselves in a friendly at the Groupama Arena. The hosts conceded a second early in the second half but quickly pulled one back. The score remained that way until the final whistle. Gabi Kanichowsky, Lenny Joseph and the whole team gained experience of playing against Arda Güler, who was particularly impressive, Fede Valverde, Endrick and others. Clearly, not all of Real Madrid's first-choice side played, but the experience will still help them next Thursday in Zabrze.
Therefore, although Górnik are favourites for the return leg, it is still worth backing the experienced Hungarian side on a +1 handicap — effectively backing the draw.
