The Round of 16 in the EFL Cup brings a Welsh derby between Wrexham and Cardiff City. Having replaced City in the Championship, can Wrexham now confirm its higher status?
Wrexham
The northern Welsh side have already caused plenty of trouble for established clubs since making their debut in the Championship this summer. In the latest round, they held second-placed Middlesbrough to a 1:1 draw after equalising in the 80th minute. Wrexham sit 16th in the table, comfortably five points clear of the relegation zone. In both of their League Cup matches so far, they have scored at least twice.
Cardiff City
Cardiff City spent all of last season fighting to avoid relegation from the Championship but ultimately dropped down. Now in League One, they have immediately begun the push for promotion. After 14 rounds, they are top of the table, though only narrowly ahead of several challengers. Their standout result in this cup run came in the third round — a 2:1 away win over Burnley, who were missing their top scorer, Jaidon Anthony.
Wrexham vs Cardiff City Prediction
Wrexham are driven by ambition and respect no opponent. They are eager to reach Wembley this season, and with that motivation, they look capable of at least holding their own in this tie.
