Former Real Madrid player may take charge of Bayer Leverkusen if Xabi Alonso departs
A former player of Real Madrid could potentially take the helm of Bayer Leverkusen in the event of Xabi Alonso's departure.
According to Sport Bild, the Leverkusen management is preparing for the possibility that the Spanish manager may leave the club next summer. One of the candidates to replace him is Raúl González, who has been managing Real Madrid Castilla, the second team of Real Madrid, since 2019. The former forward of Los Blancos ended his playing career in 2015 and began coaching the youth teams of Real Madrid in 2018.
Xabi Alonso was appointed as Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach in October 2022. Under his guidance, the team clinched the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal, suffering only one defeat in 53 matches last season. Currently, in this season’s Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen stands in fifth place with six points.
Alonso’s contract with Bayer Leverkusen runs until June 2026. Earlier reports indicated that Real Madrid is interested in appointing the 42-year-old Spaniard as their head coach next summer.
