Inzaghi questioned over alleged mafia links with Inter and Milan fans
Italy's law enforcement has questioned Simone Inzaghi, the head coach of Inter Milan. According to ESPN, authorities interviewed the 48-year-old as a witness in an investigation into alleged connections between fans of Inter and AC Milan and the mafia. Inzaghi is not under investigation.
At the end of September, police arrested 19 individuals on suspicion of extorting money from ticket and beverage sales at the San Siro, accepting bribes for leasing parking spaces near the stadium, and involvement in other football-related crimes. Several ultras from both Inter and Milan were among those detained. The majority of those arrested are believed to have ties to a major mafia group from the Calabria region in southern Italy.
The arrest warrant, spanning 568 pages, reportedly disclosed that Marco Ferdico, a leader of Inter's fan group, called Simone Inzaghi shortly before the 2022/23 Champions League final against Manchester City and allegedly requested Inzaghi to persuade the club's board to allocate more tickets for supporters.
The prosecution views Inter and AC Milan as victims in this case. The clubs have been forced to reassess their relationships with fans and explore changes to their business structures to prevent further criminal infiltration.
Simone Inzaghi has been at the helm of Inter since 2021. Under his leadership, the Nerazzurri have won the Italian championship, two Coppa Italia titles, and three domestic Super Cups.
