Messi has claimed sole possession of second place on the list of international scorers, trailing only Ronaldo
The 37-year-old Lionel Messi has secured sole possession of second place on the list of the top international goal scorers in history. In the home game of the 10th round of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup against Bolivia, Messi scored a hat-trick and provided two assists.
This performance allowed him to surpass retired Iranian player Ali Daei, with whom he previously shared the second spot, both having scored 109 goals for their national teams. Messi now has 112 goals in 189 appearances for Argentina. Cristiano Ronaldo tops the list, having scored 133 goals in 216 matches.
