Ovechkin drops to third in NHL's highest-paid players ranking

Washington Capitals forward and captain Alex Ovechkin has lost his top spot in the list of the National Hockey League's highest-paid players.

According to Forbes, the 39-year-old earns an annual income of $16 million. The Russian star receives $11 million from his contract with Washington and an additional $5 million through off-ice endorsements. Ovechkin shares the third spot in the earnings list with Edmonton Oilers' forward Connor McDavid. Colorado Avalanche's forward Nathan MacKinnon claims second place with an income of $19.5 million, while Toronto Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews leads the ranking, earning $21.7 million.

In 2023, Alex Ovechkin topped the list of highest-earning NHL players with a total income of $17.5 million.

The Washington Capitals are set to begin their new NHL regular season campaign with a home game against the New Jersey Devils on October 13.
