UEFA suspends two polish referees until summer 2025 for drunkenness and theft of road sign

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has suspended Polish referees Bartosz Frankowski and Tomasz Musiał for eight months due to drunkenness and the theft of a road sign ahead of a Champions League qualifying match.

Earlier in August, Frankowski and Musiał were set to serve as VAR officials for the third qualifying round match of the Champions League between Dynamo Kyiv and Rangers, which ended 1-1. However, on the eve of the game, the Polish referees were caught stealing a road sign while intoxicated and were subsequently detained and taken to a detox center by the police in Ljubljana.

As reported by the BBC, UEFA's Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Body has imposed sanctions on Frankowski and Musiał, suspending them from officiating duties until June 2025 for breaching "basic rules of conduct" and for bringing "sport and UEFA" into disrepute.

"Throughout my 22 years of refereeing I have tried to discharge my duties professionally and avoid any blemishes on my image.

I made a terrible mistake that I deeply regret. I will accept the consequences with humility, but at the same time I would like to hope that I will be able to rebuild your trust someday," Frankowski's statement to the BBC read.

In August, the Polish Football Association (PZPN) also suspended Bartosz Frankowski and Tomasz Musiał for three months due to the incident in Ljubljana.

Frankowski has been on FIFA's list of referees since 2014. The 38-year-old Polish official served as a reserve referee during the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament.
